Partnership with Parents
We believe that contact between home and school is a partnership that is critical for the well-being of our students, both in a pastoral and academic sense. We encourage parents to make early contact with the school should they have any worries about their children’s education. A member of staff will usually be able to see you on the same day, but it’s always best to phone the school in advance.
Written communication
We send information home to parents (via students) on our fortnightly yellow newsletter. You will also receive regular letters from the Headteacher, updating you on school policy and procedures, and a copy of The Mag once a term which highlights Bryn Celynnog’s successes.
Parents’ Evenings
We hold Parents’ Evenings annually so that parents are able to discuss the progress of their children. At these, you will be able to speak directly with the staff who teach your child, your child’s form tutor, the Head of Learning and the Headteacher. We encourage parents to make every effort to attend these important meetings.
Special information evenings are held throughout the year:
Year 7 Welcome Evening / Year 12 Welcome Evening
These meetings take place in the first week of September to enable parents to check that students have settled in well.
Year 7 Form Tutors’ Evening
This takes place at the end of the autumn term to provide parents with an update on their child’s progress. This also enables us to take swift action if any problems are emerging.
Year 9 Options Evening / Year 9 BTEC Evening
These meetings are designed to give parents and students an overview of the courses available at Key Stage 4. The careers adviser is available to give personal advice.
Year 11 Post-16 Choices Evening
Students and their parents are given ‘tasters’ of post-16 academic and vocational courses available within the Consortium. Individual guidance is available from the careers adviser.
Glan Lloyd Awards Ceremonies
We welcome parents to our annual celebration events in which we recognise individual achievement, including awards for the ‘most improved student’. Students leaving the school in Years 11, 12 and 13 receive their summative Progress File, which encompasses all the student’s achievements during his/her time at the school.
Olympic Club Assemblies
We hold a termly assembly to congratulate students who have acquired 1000 points for effort, excellent work, attendance, and contributions to the wider life of the school. Parents are very welcome to attend.
Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony
In April 2008, Bryn Celynnog introduced its very first Academic Achievement Awards Ceremony (3As). The Ceremony will now be embedded in Bryn Celynnog’s raft of annual celebratory events to honour achievements at GCSE, BTEC and A-level; to recognise academic excellence in each subject area; and to highlight the outstanding Student of the Year from each of Years 7-13.
