Homepage Art & Design

Art is about creativity and self expression. Art education is a balance between the development of practical skills and the encouragement of innovation and imagination. Art activities promote independent thinking; building self confidence and self esteem through positive achievement.

Art encourages pupils to formulate ideas, emotions and opinions. Through art we understand what it is like to be human and to make sense of the world around us.

At Bryn Celynnog we provide stimulating, safe environment in which pupils are encouraged to experiment and take risks with materials and ideas.

Our young people are living in times of rapid cultural change. The ever changing cultural and economic world demands creative thinking and ideas. Art activities help to equip our pupils with the necessary skills to face the future with confidence.

Information on Art & Design Departmentrr

The Art Department consists of three members, two full time and one part time, each occupying their own classroom. The Art Department also has a part time Technician who specializes in Ceramics.

Staff are specialists who retain a keen interest in all areas of Art practice. Classrooms are designed to cater for the different specialisms that teachers offer and provide a good learning environment for students. There is a designated area for sixth form pupils to work.

Displays of students’ work are prominent within the department and throughout the school. Students work in a wide variety of media in personal sketchbooks.

Students’ in years 7 to 9 are allocated two hours teaching a fortnight. At KS4 students’ study the WJEC Art & Design Syllabus for 5 hours a fortnight. At KS5 students’ follow the WJEC Syllabus in Art & Design for 8 Hours a fortnight.

Throughout 2009/10 there will be approx 75 students studying Art at KS4 and 15 at KS5. The majority of KS5 students go on to study art at foundation level.

Strong emphasis is placed on independent learning and personal responses to ensure good grades throughout the key stages.

The departmental programme of extracurricular activities supports students’ learning. Students have opportunities to visit galleries and work with other artists throughout the key stages. In October G.C.S.E. & `A’ Level students will be participating in a Cultural excursion to Paris, Year 9 will be visiting the Pitt River’s Museum Oxford and Year 8 will visit The National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. Research work is also supported by visits to London Galleries and local art establishments.

The Art department takes an active part in school life as can be seen by the work exhibited around the school. We are privileged to be able to work with practising artists, illustrators, sculptors and printmakers.

·        Transition projects are undertaken annually with our feeder schools and provide an excellent opportunity for students to experience a taster project in art & design.

·        The TAG art group meet on Monday lunch times for discussions and project/competition work.

·        âCongratulations to four students’ from the Monday group, they have had their work selected from their competition entry to be published in a book of illustrations called ‘Express yourself.’ Well done from everyone at Bryn Celynnog.

·        Regular competitions are open to all students’; look at notice board in art department.
